First Inter-house: Track & Field
House spirit was radiating from Canada field Sunday afternoon, marking the first inter-house event of the school year. On this beautiful, sunny afternoon, students, staff and parents were entertained by exciting track and field events. All Houses gave a valiant effort. This year, athletes were only allowed to enter one field event and one medley relay, so that every student had a chance to participate. The winners of this year's event were Duxbury and Groves', with Strathcona capturing the spirit award.

Outdoor Pursuits
The Outdoor Pursuits students enjoy many amazing experiences and lessons including, paddling, hiking, trail maintenance and learning how we play a part in our ecology. Learning to balance, brace and roll a river kayak and paddling a canoe are lessons learned on the lake; while paddling ocean kayaks in the Cowichan Bay Estuary, as they did this past week, gives relevance to how fragile that ecosystem is in our environment.

Sr. Girls Field Hockey Celebrate 2nd Consecutive ISA Title
The Senior Girls Field Hockey Team celebrated its second consecutive ISA Championship title this weekend. Shawnigan found their groove early on and did an excellent job of moving the ball around the field to control the game. Solid teamwork and dynamic attack, driven by newcomer Kira W., helped Tanis P. and Arielle F. notch goals for Shawnigan in the first half. In the second half, Crofton managed to capitalize on a field mistake by Shawnigan to make the game 2-1, however, the Shawnigan defence lead by captain, Casey C., stepped up to thwart Crofton's pressure and hold onto a well-deserved victory.

4th Straight Provincial Title!
The 1st XV finished off their season in fine form this past weekend winning Shawnigan's fourth consecutive BC AAA Championship. Our boys defeated a formidable opponent in Carson Graham 22-5. Tries were scored by Haydn E., Alan H., and Randall B. (2). Guiseppe D. kicked the two point conversion on one of these tries. It was an outstanding effort by the whole squad which saw them defeat West Vancouver 69-0, Lord Byng 60-0, St. George's 33-13 and finally Carson Graham 22-5 on route to this historic victory. Danny H. was selected to the Tournament All-Star Team. A special mention must go out to Captain, Haydn E., for his leadership and commitment towards the team.

Gold and Bronze at the C.S.S.R.A. Regatta
The Shawnigan Lake School rowing crews captured one gold and two bronze medals at the 2012 Canadian Secondary School Rowing Championships (C.S.S.R.A.) in St Catharines, Ontario.

Picking up the gold medal for Shawnigan was the Junior Girls Lightweight 4+ crew who beat out their top competition Branksome Hall from Ontario by 2 seconds with a time of 7:47.99. Having been edged into a second place finish by Branksome in the semi-final the Shawnigan crew was particularly keen to take them on in the final. "The coaches from both schools know each other so there was definitely a competitive feeling, but going into the finals, I really just wanted to race well and make my coach proud. I just thought about it one stroke at a time, which made the end that much more exciting!" states Maia d.T.

"Since we had not showed our best performance at that point we were confident going in that we had potential to improve our times. The plan was to be patient and focus on one race at a time," states Shawnigan coach, Danielle Beare, who was not surprised by her crew's success. "I didn't expect them to win but neither was I surprised when they did. They trained very hard during the year and were prepared for a tough race. Our heat and semi times set us up to be in the medals if we raced."

The entire gold medal crew with the exception of one also brought home a bronze medal with the Junior Girls 8+. The Shawnigan Senior Girls Lightweight 4+ also captured a bronze in their race while the Senior Boys 4+ and Senior Girls 8+ both had 4th place finishes just narrowly missing a medal. Grade 12 student Jordan J. placed 5th in the Senior boys Lightweight 1x category.
Prior to the selection Shawnigan applicants were invited to showcase their talent in their chosen discipline at an adjudication evening held at St Margaret's on April 26th. I owe my Dogwood Scholarship for creative writing to Mr. Connolly. In part for the things he wrote in my reference letter, but more so for everything he has taught me and all the inspiration he has given me in the two years that I have had him as a teacher.
Shawnigan earns big win at Sanix Rugby Tournament
Shawnigan Lake School pulled off one of the biggest wins in the history of the prestigious Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament in Japan when the team beat top-seeded Kelston Boys High School from New Zealand.

The three time BC Provincial Championship squad from Shawnigan Lake School travelled to the Sanix Tournament for the first time knowing that competition would be some of the best in the world. And since no Canadian team to date has managed more than one win at the tournament, Shawnigan was not considered one of the favourites going into their draw but they did something that no other team at the tournament managed when they pulled off a win against Kelston who are widely regarded as the best high school team on the planet and who eventually went on to win the 2012 Sanix title.

For grade 12 student and team veteran Evan G. the victory was a highlight of his rugby career. "It was like winning the provincial high school championship. The atmosphere in the stadium and the emotions coming from the boys were unreal; it felt like we had really accomplished something significant. The win wasn’t so much a surprise but a true milestone for the team because we never came into a game expecting to lose."

All in all, the Shawnigan team set a new Canadian record at the tournament by recording 4 wins in 6 games and finishing 10th overall, the highest place finish for a Canadian team ever.
Young people around the world are already showing initiative and inspiring others."

The Shawnigan conference is the only Model UN hosted by a high school on Vancouver Island and is both student-planned and student-run pooling the energy and commitment from the Shawnigan Model UN team with support from neighboring school Brentwood, whose students moderated the General Assembly.

Shawnigan teacher and Model UN leader, Paul Klassen, was pleased with the growth and adjustments to this year's program. "Although this year's conference saw more students participate than last year, the event was unique in that it offered an intimate committee atmosphere compared to large conferences where students do not have as many opportunities to speak."
Shawnigan Rugby Credentials Recognised by National Team
Shawnigan is proud to congratulate Oliver N., Randall B., Chris M. and Guiseppe T., who were all selected to the Canadian U17 team headed to the 2012 International Rugby Festival at Wellington College in the UK from April 7 to 13, 2012.
With the exception of Oliver, it will be the first time for these athletes wearing the Canadian colours. Grade 11 student Randall is excited to be slipping into his first Canadian jersey. "I felt really nervous going into the tryouts. Now that I've been selected, I am really excited to represent my country overseas. I just want to play to my full potential and highlight our country through commitment on and off the field."
Shawnigan coach Tim Murdy praises all four athletes for their continued growth with the school's senior team. "There is no question that their development as athletes has been enhanced through their involvement in our program and vice versa. The time spent in our rugby skills, human performance and team trainings has helped all four to maximize their potential. However, they have all taken these opportunities and 'run with them' so that they have excelled through their hard work and commitment to excellence.
The U17 squad will head out on March 29 to insure a comfortable week of acclimatization and time for two training matches prior to the opening of the tournament on April 7. Canada's first game will kick-off against Belgium on April 8, followed by games against England South U16 on April 11 and France U16 on April 13. Shawnigan EDGE program visits Thailand
The Shawnigan EDGE leadership program is a popular Spring Break alternative that has many students vying for one of the sought-after spots on the tour. EDGE stands for: Engagement, Development, Gratitude and Experience. The objective of each year’s selected project is always collaborative in nature, seeking to immerse Shawnigan students in living and working conditions in the country they are visiting and for a cause that will benefit the local community. The motto is to help provide a hand up for a community — as opposed to a handout — and one of the best ways to do that is to improve access to education. That is why this year’s EDGE project is sending students for their fourth year of partnering on a project with the Chiangrai College of Agriculture and Technology (CRCAT) Ban Natoe campus, one of eight sub-colleges or satellite campuses of the CRCAT in Thailand.

Ban Natoe is located in the northern tip of Thailand, just a few kilometres from the Myanmar border. There are six hill tribe cultures within a relatively short radius, making it a place of rich and fascinating diversity—especially because each hill tribe has its own first language and distinctive culture. All of the hill tribes are relative newcomers, most having moved to Thailand within the past 200 years. Being isolated by their rural locations and their cultural differences, they are hampered by poverty and a lack of education.

CRCAT’s Ban Natoe campus brings education and agricultural training to hill tribe students. The CRCAT is well known for its strong focus on sustainability and highly regarded for its proven record of effectiveness in delivering education to rural people. This time the Shawnigan EDGE team is helping to construct a new kitchen and a covered dining area for the Natoe students who, up until now, have had to prepare all of their meals in a tiny bamboo hut and then find a place to squat down and eat it. The project is much too big to be completed during the three-week trip, so Shawnigan students are funding and working on one phase of the construction. The first phase for the foundation work was already completed in December by students from ITE in Singapore, which also partners with Natoe in the same way as the Shawnigan EDGE Leadership Program.

It is a privilege for Shawnigan students to work alongside the hill tribe peoples in a shared endeavour, to appreciate by experience something of what life is like for the less-privileged 98% of the world’s population, and to witness firsthand how happiness can exist in the complete absence of material wealth.
Shawnigan's 38th Annual Ski Week
A yearly highlight at Shawnigan Lake School is the annual Ski Week that transports nearly the entire student body and staff to the hills of Manning Park Resort for a week of frolicking in the snow. This amazing experience, and no small logistical feat, began in 1974 and has continued to be an important community-building mainstay of the School’s educational program.
It is hard for the written word to do justice to the positive energy and feeling of connectedness that we experience at Ski Week. It is an opportunity for teachers and students to interact in a different environment, learn together outside of the classroom, move beyond our comfort zone both physically and mentally and bring cooperation and teamwork to a whole new level.
The best way to sum it up is to compare the whole week to a well-loved, reliable and sturdy family campervan that faithfully delivers an unforgettable holiday each season and symbolizes years of cherished family memories packed into each trip. The Ski Week campervan is prepped well before the departure date, which is the first Sunday of every February. And the vehicle isn’t just well maintained; it is inspected, greased, tweaked, realigned, packed, repacked to insure it delivers a phenomenal road trip for everyone. The main drivers are Deputy-Head Jo-Anne Kingstone along with Shawnigan teachers Wendy Woollven and Nigel Mayes, who pour hours of energy and passion into pre-trip planning for a seamless Ski Week program. Their tireless dedication insures that no pothole, big or small, deviates the Ski Week campervan from running anything less than perfectly.
Another instrumental group at Ski Week is the grade 11 class. They are a large volunteer leadership group that takes charge of organizing games and groups to help with all kinds of Ski Week activities. Their multitude of responsibilities include being Snow Angels, experienced skiers and snowboarders who offer assistance on the hill to those in need, the bedtime helpers who gently nudge the juniors toward their rooms and make sure they are ready for “lights out”, babysitters to watch over staff children daily, recycling supervisors and carnival planners. The energy and atmosphere of Ski Week is highly dependent on the enthusiasm that the grade 11 team brings to the slopes.
Over the years, the Ski Week program has remained largely unchanged but has expanded into a mini Shawnigan Olympics. The week is filled with Interhouse competitions including downhill and x-country races, a snow sculpture event, tug-of-war and the academic Reach-for-the-Top challenge. Other highlights include the much-anticipated Staff Revue for the students, the fierce but fun staff versus grade 12 broomball game, the carnival festivities on the final evening and the new addition of musical après ski fun during the lunch break.
After six days in the snow, the Shawnigan family piles back into the campervan and prepares to be lulled into comfortable rest on the homeward journey along the Princeton-Hope highway. The feeling we take with us is one of contentment, pleasure and accomplishment for all the games and hard work it took to make Ski Week happen and moreover, a general gratitude that another family experience has been enjoyed by all.

Field Hockey Team Strikes Gold!
The Shawnigan Senior Girls Field Hockey squad wrote history over the mid-term break and it had nothing to do with class work. The 21 player squad is the first Shawnigan field hockey team to bring home the elusive blue banner as AA Provincial Champions.

"I am really proud of our girls because I feel that they really deserve this big win since they worked so hard together for over 15 months and became such a powerful group of young, inspired and committed athletes," stated Director of Field Hockey and coach Benjamin Koepp.

After confidently securing a provincial berth as Island Champions, the Shawnigan squad also snagged the #1 seed for the Provincial championships based on their undefeated 24-3-1 season record. The girls left no doubt to their top ranking by marching through pool play, quarter finals and semi-finals with a total tally of 29 goals and conceding only 1 against.

As anticipated the squad faced off against AA rivals and defending 2010 champions Collingwood. Having already defeated the Collingwood team at their first meeting during the UBC Tier I tournament, the Shawnigan squad knew that the pressure was on for a repeat performance and that the Collingwood players would be on fire to revenge their previous 2-5 loss.

The match was physical with dynamic running from both teams and plenty of action in the offensive zones. Shawnigan drew first blood off of a rebound and notched a second goal off of a tip late in the second half to secure the victory.

Co-coach Kelly Koepp emphasizes the team unity that has propelled the team on their road to success from the very beginning. "This team has worked hard for this moment. Every single player on the squad from our most experienced to the ones that have only picked up a stick for the first time in the last year have brought something valuable to the squad. They are unrelenting in their positive support of each other and putting in a 100% both on and off the field. Some of them have dreamed of this title since grade 8 and they really deserve to savour the feeling of being champions."
Shawnigan Delegate shines at McGill Model UN Conference.
Shawnigan's Johnny B. was awarded a 'Book Prize' for his skill and contribution in the Security Council at the recent McGill University's Secondary Schools' United Nations Symposium (SSUNS).

The SSUNS conference is one of Canada's, if not the western hemisphere's, most prestigious Model United Nations conference, hosting approximately 1,300 high school students from across North America. Johnny was a member of the United Nations Security Council as a delegate for Columbia. The primary focus for his delegation was to strategize plans for stabilizing post-revolution Egypt. An additional area of debate was the biological and chemical weaponry in the People's Republic of Korea.

SSUNS is first and foremost a friendly and stimulating environment in which delegates can freely exchange ideas by debating, discussing and reaching agreement on all manner of international issues. Awards at SSUNS are bestowed upon those delegates whose behaviour at the conference enriches the learning of their peers to an exceptional degree. Johnny was awarded a 'Book Prize' by his committee directors (McGill undergraduates), who wished to recognize his enthusiastic and dynamic participation in the Security Council.

The grade 12 student is overwhelmed by the official recognition he received at SUNSS. "To go up and accept an award in a room of 1,300 people was pretty awesome. The best part, however, was more that I was winning an award for Shawnigan. It was awesome to bring home something that we as a School and as a delegation can be proud of. And I wouldn't have received the award if it wasn't for the support and drive of our teachers Mr. Klassen or Mrs. Coy making sure I was well-prepared. This award is definitely a cherry for my grade 12 year."
Junior Field Hockey Wins ISA
The Shawnigan Junior A Field Hockey team continued their streak of success, winning the ISA tournament this past weekend.

The tournament opened with Shawnigan taking on their cross-town rivals, Brentwood. The Brentwood team fought hard, determined to avenge their previous losses. Playing well-structured hockey, Shawnigan moved the ball around the pitch with pace and purpose creating some brilliant attacking play. The first goal, in particular, was a superb deflection by Sierra F. off the right post. The Shawnigan girls went on to win the match 4-0.

The second game versus Collingwood proved to be a physical affair with both teams fighting for every ball. Shelby D. made some dangerous runs down the left wing and Ella F. and Shelby I. connected for some well-timed give-and-goes down the right side of the field. The defence held strong, and Shawnigan came out 2-0 victors.

The final versus Crofton House was an exciting display of hockey by both teams. While Shawnigan was skillful in possession through the midfield, Crofton House showed they were a disciplined team with excellent tackling and counter-attack abilities. Shawnigan was sharp defensively and created numerous scoring opportunities – free play and penalty corners. With five seconds left in regulation play, the girls were finally rewarded with a goal by Shelby D. Before the ball was even back to the halfway line, the umpire blew his whistle and the team charged the field to celebrate. It was a thrilling finish to an excellent tournament!
The uniform at Shawnigan Lake School usually consists of business attire and tidy classroom dress, but a few times over the past month we have suited up in running shoes and specially designed t-shirts to put our full support behind many fundraising initiatives for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The wave of support started with the annual Terry Fox run around campus and the traditional passing back of the Terry Fox jersey. The shirt starts with an appointed lead runner and moves steadily through each participant, ending in the hands of the final runner over the finish line; symbolically uniting our School community in the fight against cancer.

The next surge in our efforts consisted of more than 230 Shawnigan students and staff lacing up their runners to race, run, jog, walk and stroll in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation at the Run for the Cure in downtown Victoria.

The crest of support peaked when Cops for Cancer rolled onto campus at 9:33 am on October 5th. The 23 bikers pedaling across Vancouver Island to support children with cancer were greeted by the entire school in their new "word shirts", which were sold to support the cause. This year's word was defined by Shawnigan alum and long-time, inspiring English teacher Jay Connolly, "Create: to bring (something) into existence: as in art, as in hope, as in love. To cause (something) to happen as a result of one's actions; their commitment created new possibilities."

In each individual way, we were all part of a quest to create something positive in the fight against cancer. Each stride taken on the long run is a step towards a cure. Each t-shirt sold is a research opportunity born. Each dollar donated in bake sales is another child at Camp Good Times and each head shaved is a generous donation to fundraising, generating positive energy and laughter. Thank you to everyone, who supported this worthy cause and for creating hope in our lives.
Senior Girls Win Field Hockey Friendship Cup
The Shawnigan Senior Field hockey team set the tone for this year's season with their first tournament victory at the 2011 Friendship Cup.

The Friendship Cup is an ideal tournament for any team to test the waters and pit themselves against other local Island teams in both the AA and AAA divisions. The Shawnigan team was anxious to test their skills and was rewarded early with a 5-0 defeat over Queen Margaret School followed by an equally strong performance against Mount Doug with the same scoreline. Having secured the first place position in their pool, the team then crossed over to face off against Glenlyon Norfolk at the Duncan Sportplex. The Shawnigan players notched two goals early in the first half to secure the upper-hand and did not relinquish it until the final whistle blew for a 4-1 victory leading into the final. In the final match Shawnigan faced-off against AAA Cowichan in a fast-paced game with talented players on both sides. Nevertheless, the Shawnigan athletes were a stronger cohesive unit, which allowed them to move the ball quickly in their tactical system and capitalize on their goal-scoring opportunities. The beautiful teamwork lead to a well-deserved 4-1 victory and the first ever Friendship Cup title for the team.

Coach Benjamin Koepp commented on his team's victory, "It was fantastic to see the girls working so well as a unit and implementing tactical elements that were introduced last season. It makes a big difference that the team can pick-up where we left off last year, without needing to rebuild basics. The structure and tactical awareness on the field is definitely better and exciting to watch when the girls are having fun and playing the game well."

In the true nature of the Friendship Cup, six junior Shawnigan players stepped up to keep Highland Senior Secondary in the tournament. Highland was on the verge of withdrawing from the tournament because of depleted numbers in the team but the Shawnigan juniors filled out the squad over the two day tournament. Highland coach, Colleen Schmidt was impressed with the performance of the younger Shawnigan players.

"They are such a skilled bunch, but also so unselfish - I noticed on more than one occasion that a Shawnigan player would pass off the ball to a Highland player even when they could have easily scored themselves. They are such nice kids, who really show their love for the game and were an excellent representation of the school and it's field hockey program."
Mill Bay and District Conservation Society Recognized
Shawnigan Lake School congratulates The Mill Bay and District Conservation Society on receiving the BC Hydro Community Champion Award for their commitment to improving and enhancing the salmon stock in the Shawnigan Lake watershed.

For the past four years, BC Hydro has sponsored the Community Champion program which encourages grade 4 to 12 classes around British Columbia to nominate environmental organizations that are making a difference in their local community. The Mill Bay and District Conservation Society won the award this year for their ongoing volunteer efforts in sustaining the salmon run in Shawnigan Creek and support the Shawnigan Lake School Hatchery program. As part of the award, BC Hydro Community Relations Manager Ted Olynyk presented the Society with a donation of $1,500, for their conservation efforts.

The Society's nomination came from Shawnigan Lake School, which has been working together with volunteers from the conservation group for approximately 10 years. Grade 12 student Lisa U. submitted the official nomination letter based on her firsthand experience working with the Society, "From a personal standpoint, our school is very lucky to have a close relationship with these volunteers for they provide the broodstock for our Hatchery program. We are thrilled to work hand in hand with the Mill Bay and District Conservation Society, and always enjoy helping this team whenever the use of young legs are needed. The continuous dedication shown by the Society volunteers is truly inspirational".

The Mill Bay and District Conservation Society plays a vital role in the Shawnigan community. The dedicated volunteers put tremendous amounts of effort into ensuring that the Shawnigan Creek salmon run is a success each year by helping returning salmon navigate seven impassible waterfalls through the Shawnigan watershed. The volunteers do this by constructing traps for the returning Coho and running a shuttle system to transport them 30 meters up to road level where they are transported to the watershed to reach their spawning grounds. The Mill Bay and District Conservation Society has been active for 31 years and is comprised of volunteers ranging in age from early teens through to the seventies.

The BC Hydro Community Champion program is an opportunity for young residents to engage with their local community groups to learn how to make an environmental difference. It works in concert with other Power Smart youth initiatives and the conservation ethic already introduced by BC Hydro.
